Our ministries to persons in the second half of life has been through the Tower League and Older Adult Ministries, which provide spiritual empowerment and aging guidance for the congregation and the community, through programs, fellowship, pastoral care, study, faith development, advocacy, volunteer opportunities, intergenerational activities, education, and cultural opportunities.
The Membership and Parish Life Commission is offering a new 50+ Initiative, focused on the changing patterns of work and lifestyle as our population grows older, with significantly increased numbers of the Baby Boom generation, born after the Second World War.

The Art of Movement for Older Adults.
Today much is known about the benefits of physical activity in helping to allay heart problems, high blood pressure, stress, falling, depression and arthritis. Beliefs about aging are very different from those of just ten years ago. It used to be thought that after the age of 50 we didn't need to be able to run!
The vitality of the body and our engagement in everyday activities does not depend on being able to run but we are seriously undermined by our beliefs about how we age. If you cannot run at the age of 50 you will be experiencing many physical problems in later years. Inhibited joint movement, disintegration in confidence, difficulties with balance and coordination and a general diminishing of the enjoyment of life are some of the consequences of limiting our physical expectations.
Fortunately recovering the pleasures of moving easily is possible no matter what age or condition. If you are having any of these problems it is time to join one of the movement classes offered by the Tower League. We have people of all ages and abilities. There is something for everyone.
Monday 10. AM. A coed class for energetic older adults, will challenge and expand your range of movement. Room # 411 MLK.
Thursday 9. AM. Men's Class. Works activities for those who are more sedentary and who feel a need to get a workout. Room # 423 MLK.
Thursday 10. AM. A coed class. Beginning slowly and works up to a more energetic finale. A good support for beginning to challenge yourself, working with a range of movement in all the major joints. Room # 423 MLK.
Thursday 11. AM. Special attention for particular problems of old injuries, Parkinson's disease, arthritis, knee and hip replacements, balance. Keeping what you have and learning to move more efficiently. Room # 423 MLK.
So don't go along with stereotypes about the aging body. Stay active and have fun.
